Five die in naval ship mishap

The Indian Navy's first landing platform dock ship INS Jalashwa, has met with an accident in the Bay of Bengal.

According to reports, five sailors have been killed and others injured. A gas leakage is said to have caused it.

The ship was commissioned last year from the United States and is based in Vishakapatnam.

The accident is said to have taken place during naval exercises in the Bay of Bengal.

The ship will dock at Port Blair in the Andamans to take part in a fleet exercise on Saturday morning.

INS Jalashwa, a 16,900-tonne warship, second only to the aircraft carrier INS Viraat was bought to give the Navy strategic sea lift capability.

It can transport a battalion of upto a 1000 soldiers over long distances.

INS Jalashwa had arrived in India in September 2007 in a deal that was the largest ever defence purchase from the United States till now.
